St. Grenadine of the Chalice

Long ago in a proud villiage lived a noble family. The nobleman had lost his stock to raiders, and was left destitute. To save the houshold, he offered his daughter Grenadine in marriage to a rich man from far away.

Grenadine did not love him, and ran and hid herself away deep in the woods. Now, in the woods there was a demon, and he heard her crying, and sought to capture her soul through a temptation.

The demon came to her in the form of a stag, and spoke to her with honeyed words. "Take of this golden chalice" it said, "And drink of it, and all the world and wealth will be yours, and so your father's fortune may be restored."

Grenadine recognized the temptation, and spoke softly. "I cannot give up my soul, even for my freedom, I will not drink." And in speaking she let slip the golden chalice and spilt the wine upon the ground.

From the wine there suddeny sprang three white hounds, who rose up barking and snarling, and chased the wicked stag off deep into the woods.

Grenadine retrieved the chalice from the ground, and brought it to her father's house. The chalice was of the finest gold, and in selling it the nobleman was able to recover much wealth, and so Grenadine was able to marry of her own accord, and lived long and happy thereafter.
